NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Education has revealed concerning statistics regarding the country's education sector. According to the data released for the 2024-25 academic year, approximately 8,000 schools (around 7,936) across the nation have recorded zero enrollment. Adding to the concern, over 20,000 teachers (20,817) are currently employed in these schools without any students, highlighting a clear misuse of government resources.
These figures clearly indicate an imbalance within the education system across different states.
State-wise Situation
* States with the Highest Zero-Enrollment Schools:
West Bengal tops this list with the highest number of schools reporting no students.
It is followed by Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.
33 Lakh Students in Single-Teacher Schools
The report also highlighted severe flaws in teacher allocation. Across the country, over 33 lakh students are studying in schools staffed by only a single teacher. This situation severely impacts the Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR) and, consequently, the quality of education.
* States with the Highest Single-Teacher Schools:
* Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of such schools.
* The subsequent positions are held by Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh.
Despite the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's assurance that several measures are being taken under the National Education Policy (NEP) to address these issues, the statistics clearly show that these disparities persist at the ground level.
