The Press Council of India was established on November 16, 1966, based on the recommendation of the First Press Commission of India in 1956. The Objective of the Press Council of India:

It serves as a platform to discuss the challenges and problems faced by the press sector.
This Council also has the power to exercise its authority over government departments.
