A gruesome double murder in Nellore city has sent shockwaves across the region. Two habitual offenders, reportedly drunk, intercepted passersby and demanded money. When refused, they flew into a rage, brutally killed two men, and threw their bodies into a canal before fleeing the scene. The police, however, managed to nab the accused within hours.
According to police reports, locals discovered two bodies in the Jaffer Saheb Canal near Tikkana Park on Tuesday morning and immediately alerted authorities. Police teams rushed to the spot, retrieved the bodies, and initiated an investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that the victims had been attacked with knives and stones before being dumped into the canal.
The deceased were identified as Polayya, a local who lived in a temporary hut nearby, and Shiva, a native of Kadapa district. Shiva had been staying in Nellore for some time, working in catering jobs. He was said to be addicted to alcohol and often slept near the Penna riverbed after drinking.
On Monday night, Shiva, along with four friends, was heading towards the Penna bridge when they were stopped by two known criminals, Sai Shankar and Manoj. Both men, under the influence of alcohol, demanded ₹500 from the group and threatened to kill them if they refused. When the group declined, a heated argument broke out. Shiva’s friends managed to escape, but he was caught and attacked viciously with knives and stones.
At that moment, Polayya, who happened to be passing by, intervened and questioned the attackers. Enraged, they turned on him as well, assaulting him brutally. After ensuring both victims were unconscious, the accused dumped their bodies into the Jaffer Saheb Canal and fled the spot.
During investigation, police found that Manoj had 12 criminal cases pending against him at Muttukur Police Station, including an attempt-to-rape case on an elderly woman. Sai Shankar was also found to be involved in three cases registered at Santapet, Chinnabazar, and Vedayapalem police stations.
With the help of Shiva’s friends, police traced and arrested both accused within hours. The heinous crime has created widespread fear and outrage among local residents. Police have tightened security in the area and further investigation is underway.
