Fall of Hampi: From Glory to a City of Ruins

Hampi (Karnataka): Once a magnificent city on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, Hampi was regarded as the second-largest city in the world. As the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, it symbolized wealth, peace, and power. Bustling markets of precious stones, golden temples, and foreign traders from across the world defined its unmatched grandeur.

Under the reign of Krishnadevaraya, the empire witnessed its golden age. However, after his death, instability began to weaken the kingdom.

Aliya Rama Raya later emerged as a key power, ruling strategically while keeping Sadasiva Raya as a nominal king. He adopted a “divide and rule” policy among the Deccan Sultanates.

The turning point came when the Sultanates of Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmednagar, Bidar, and Berar united. On January 23, 1565, the historic Battle of Talikota took place.

Though Vijayanagara initially dominated, betrayal within the ranks and the use of advanced weaponry by the Sultanates reversed the situation. Rama Raya was captured and executed, leading to panic and collapse of the army.

The victorious forces then marched to Hampi, destroying the once-glorious city. Temples were demolished, treasures looted, and the city was reduced to ruins.
