Gas Supply Concerns in the Country: PM Narendra Modi Holds High-Level Review

Key Meeting with Petroleum and External Affairs Ministers

Amid growing concerns over gas availability and fuel reserves in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the situation related to gas supply and petroleum reserves. The meeting focused on ensuring adequate availability of LPG, petrol, and diesel across the country in the wake of evolving global energy dynamics.

The review meeting was attended by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, along with senior officials from key ministries. The discussions covered international developments affecting energy markets, India’s fuel import strategies, domestic fuel reserves, and steps required to maintain stable supply across the nation.

According to official sources, the Prime Minister reviewed the current availability of LPG cylinders, petrol, and diesel stocks and examined the preparedness of the country to deal with any potential disruptions in supply. With India being one of the largest consumers of imported crude oil, global geopolitical developments and fluctuations in international oil markets continue to play a crucial role in determining domestic fuel availability and pricing.

Global energy markets have recently witnessed uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions, disruptions in supply chains, and fluctuations in crude oil production among major exporting nations. These factors have influenced global crude oil prices and natural gas supply patterns, prompting governments worldwide to reassess their energy security strategies. In this context, the Indian government has been closely monitoring the international situation to ensure that domestic consumers do not face shortages or sudden disruptions.

During the meeting, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri reportedly briefed the Prime Minister on the current fuel stock levels maintained by public sector oil marketing companies. He also presented details about ongoing import arrangements, strategic reserves, and contingency plans in place to address any possible supply gaps. Officials emphasized that India maintains sufficient reserves but continues to strengthen its energy preparedness to tackle unexpected global developments.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also provided insights into India’s diplomatic engagements with major oil and gas producing nations. Discussions included the status of existing energy supply agreements, prospects of expanding import partnerships, and the role of diplomatic channels in ensuring stable and diversified energy supplies. India has been actively engaging with countries in the Middle East, Russia, and other energy-rich regions to maintain a steady flow of crude oil and natural gas imports.

Prime Minister Modi reportedly emphasized the need for proactive planning and coordination among ministries to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply across the country. He directed officials to closely monitor the availability and distribution of LPG cylinders, particularly for household consumers, so that ordinary citizens do not face difficulties.

The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of efficient management of petrol and diesel reserves, asking oil companies and government agencies to maintain adequate stock levels and streamline logistics. Ensuring timely delivery of LPG cylinders and maintaining smooth operations in the distribution network were also highlighted as key priorities.

Recent reports from certain regions about delays in LPG cylinder deliveries and concerns regarding supply availability have prompted the government to examine the issue more closely. Officials said that while there is currently no nationwide shortage, the government wants to remain prepared for any potential disruptions that could arise due to international developments or logistical challenges.

In addition, discussions reportedly included measures such as increasing strategic fuel reserves, diversifying import sources, strengthening domestic refining capacity, and improving supply chain infrastructure. These steps are considered essential for enhancing India’s long-term energy security.

Government sources indicated that the review meeting was part of the Centre’s ongoing efforts to maintain stability in the country’s fuel supply system. The administration aims to ensure that households, industries, and transportation sectors receive uninterrupted fuel supply without significant price shocks or availability issues.

Following the meeting, it is expected that the central government may soon announce additional policy measures or strategic decisions aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security framework. These may include steps to expand storage capacity, optimize import channels, and stabilize domestic supply mechanisms.

Overall, the government has reiterated that safeguarding the interests of consumers remains its top priority. Officials have assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure that petrol, diesel, and LPG supplies remain stable and accessible, preventing inconvenience to the public even amid global energy uncertainties.
