In the clip, hardened criminals and undertrials are seen freely roaming the prison premises while enjoying amenities that many are calling "luxuries." Inmates are caught on camera comfortably using smartphones, making calls, and watching television. Even more surprisingly, they are seen accessing popular OTT streaming platforms like Netflix on large screens, completely bypassing the strict bans on electronic devices inside the jail.
"This Time the Cup is Ours"
Adding to the shock value of the footage is a casual conversation among the prisoners regarding the outside world. In one specific segment of the video, a group of inmates is seen enthusiastically discussing an upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match. Highlighting their unrestricted access to live entertainment, one of the prisoners confidently remarks about the local Bengaluru team, saying, "This time the cup is ours" (Ee sala cup namde). This blatant display of freedom indicates that the inmates are receiving real-time updates and enjoying the tournament just like anyone on the outside.
Swift Action and Suspension of Staff
The viral video triggered widespread outrage, forcing the Karnataka Prisons Department to intervene immediately. How smartphones, internet access, and smart TVs made their way past security checks and jammers remains a massive question mark for the police department. Following a preliminary inquiry into the massive security breach, higher authorities took strict disciplinary action. Three jail staff members were suspended with immediate effect for severe dereliction of duty and allegedly facilitating these illegal perks for the inmates.
